Hampshire Constabulary has submitted revised plans for the refurbishment of its HQ in Romsey Road, Winchester.

Last year, city planners rejected a £5.2m proposal to clad the nine-storey, 1960s tower block, mainly with glass, because they felt it would have too great an impact on the city.

The latest proposals are to use less reflective glass and to construct a new foyer, atrium link, new two-storey office block and cycle shed. There will be parking for 296 cars.

The authority's design statement says the new build would again consist primarily of glass, for light and visibility purposes, but that it would be used in conjunction with other materials.

It reads: "The plans aim to create a faade that is not over-designed or ambitious, but more relaxed."

Simon Hayes, chairman of the police authority, said: "What we've tried to do is to address the concerns that were raised by the first application."

The new plans made alterations to parking arrangements and the cladding and incorporated a travel planall problem areas in the previous application, he said.

Mr Hayes added that the aim was to provide the best working environment for staff and to protect the fabric of the building, which, he said, was "slowly deteriorating".

The revised application is available for inspection at the city council's planning department, Avalon House, Chesil Street, Winchester.

The deadline for commenting is Friday, December 3rd.
