SHE lived by the book for five days - and Southampton student Lois Perrin boxed clever to come out on top in the most public of challenges.

Among the goodies scooped by the 19-year-old in the contest at WestQuay were a holiday for four to South Africa and a motorbike.

Student Lois entered the two and a half square metre Perspex box with rival Lee Jackson, 30, on Tuesday.

They were armed only with a phone, a BT phone book and a budget of £1,500 to live on to complete challenges.

Power FM listeners voted Lois as the winner, and she got to keep everything she had bought or blagged.

But Lee, from Portsmouth, was left empty handed with everything he collected going to the Help a Local Child charity.

Lois, from Bassett, who is studying business management at Southampton University, said after leaving the box: "I can't believe I have won. I really enjoyed the 'Living by the Book' experience though I did find it tough to keep going sometimes.

"I'm really pleased that the Help a Local Child Charity has benefited from my case of fame."

The pair had been selected from hundreds of hopefuls by Power FM listeners, who suggested daily tasks for them complete with the help of the phone book.

They had separate living areas in the see-through box, with individual phone boxes and a toilet and washroom.

They were barred from cooking, so had to rely on ordering takeaways during their stay.

Canny Lois was able to get by on just under £700 to meet the tasks in the challenge, and pocketed the remaining money with the rest of the goodies.

Among the items handed over to charity from Lee's stash were a mountain bike, video camera, TV and DVDs.
