THE waiting is nearly over. In less than a month, Southampton's very own Monopoly game will hit the shelves - finally revealing which city landmarks have been included on the famous board.

Today Monopoly officials offered some clues about which locations may have been voted for the property trading game's most expensive - and cheapest - squares.

Southampton Monopoly promoter Graham Barnes revealed that St Mary's Stadium was one of two possible options for Mayfair - the most prestigious square.

"Voting has been so close that we have had to roll the Monopoly dice on this one," he said.

"There really has been nothing in it."

Voting for the game's cheapest square - traditionally Old Kent Road - has also been close but today Monopoly chiefs confirmed the choice was between London Road and Southampton Common.

Meanwhile, the Daily Echo has been confirmed on the board's Community Chest slot.

Today Monopoly officials launched an appeal to find Southampton people whose birthday falls on October 21 - the day the game is launched.

Promoters want to make the date a double celebration by finding a Southampton birthday boy, girl, man or woman to receive the very first game to roll off the presses.

All names will go into a Monopoly top hat, with the first one pulled out receiving the city's first Monopoly game as well as being invited to the launch.

The promoters are keeping the launch location top secret but it is rumoured to be a five- star landmark believed to be a second Mayfair contender.

Graham said: "We are keeping all 30 of the new Monopoly Southampton sites close to our community chests until launch day.

"It's set to be the number one game this Christmas, with demand from High Street retailers already phenomenal.

"We have had to make thousands more game sets than at first anticipated. We're now working all hands to the deck to get it out for next month."
