Southampton anglers continue to dominate the overall leader table of the ISAC open league with Steve Deathe leading the series at the midway point of the season with 21 points.

Steve Harder from Shirley who won the series last year is just two points further adrift after the latest match held at Abbotsbury which saw 94 anglers battling it out on the beach.

Derek Thompson from Southampton beached the heaviest bass during the latest match event weighing 3lb 12oz which took his bait on the retrieve while Julian Shambrook apprehended a fine thornback ray weighing 11lb 7.25oz.

Pete Jones also got on the trail of the biggies landing a 10lb 9.50oz smoothhound while Reg Clough from East Woodyates landed a 9lb 7oz thorneback ray.

Others species landed during the event included dogfish, pout, red gurnard, poor cod and silver eels.

The top performer on the night was Tony McDonald with a 43lb 14.25oz haul of doggies, other zone winners included Reg Clough 18lb 1oz, Steve Deathe 14lb 7oz and Ian Dancy 13lb 8oz.

Looking at the overall leader table, Deathe and Harder head the table followed by Tony Burton 24 points, Josh Simmonds 24 points and Ian Golds 33 points.

The next match in the open pegged series has been set for Cogdon on July 13 with fishing from 8pm to midnight.

Bass, stingrays and smoothhound have been a feature for small boat anglers during the past few days with Fraser Sandbridge-Smith sampling some cracking sport over Christchurch ledge while fishing from his own small craft "The Fishy Finger".

The 35-year-old plumber used mackerel presented on a 7/0 hook to tempt a trio of bass with his heaviest fish thumping the scales down to 14lb 4oz to set a new personal best.

A mark just off Sowley in the western Solent saw the downfall on a 38lb stingray for Cliff Mitchell who offered a crab bait on a size 4/0 hook while fishing from his own small boat "Searanger".

Mitchell, a 36-year-old company director from Lyndhurst went of to land six smoothhound with the heaviest fish, a sixteen pounder putting up a good scrap, after weighing all the fish were returned alive.

On the shore Clive Eaton landed the fish of the week in the shape of a 2lb 14oz sole caught from the deep-water section at Magazine lane which lies in the shadows of Southampton container port.

Eaton from neighbouring Ashurst used ragworm to temp the specimen during and evening session, which also produced a fair number of pouting and several silver eels.

Smoothhound failed to put in an appearance during the final round of the Sammy's spring series held at Selsey with pouting completely dominated during a wet and windy night.

Seventeen-year-old Lee Cullen won on the night with 25 fish worth 486 points ahead of England International Ian Golds with 469 points.

Daniel Mogridge from Fareham came third with 372 points followed by Dave Ware and Dave Edwards with 343 & 316 points respectively.

The overall series winner was Ina Gold with 145 points while Daniel Mogridge was just one point further adrift, Dave was third with 134 points followed by Lee Cullen 129 and John Williams 126 points.

A new series gets underway on July 9 at Clarence beach with fishing from 8pm to midnight, there will be a £10 signing on fee to entry the league and then a £5 match fee, there will be a 100% payout of all money.

The all night pegged Chesil open gets underway on Saturday evening at Cogden with fishing from 8pm to 7am the following morning, registration kicks of at 6pm from the main carp park at Cogden.

Chesil beach is fishing pretty well at the moment as soon as the sun disappears with a wide variety of species on offer which should include, dogfish, pout, smoothhound, gurnard, sole, rays , silver eels, pollack and a decent plaice if you are lucky.
