SEA SCOUTS in Fareham will remain afloat thanks to a £10,000 cash boost.

With membership booming, the 2nd Fareham Sea Scouts have been desperately seeking funds to replace their condemned pontoon and gangway.

Now Fareham Borough Council has approved a £6,000 grant and Hampshire County Council has chipped in with £4,000 on the condition that Fareham council came up with the £6,000.

The remaining £2,000 will be funded by the club.

Group treasurer David Hawkley, who is heading the project, was delighted. He said he was already thinking of the next goal of replacing the current boats and engines.

"The existing pontoon is falling apart and rickety and it's not safe for the children," he added.

"This grant is excellent news."

Situated in an annex of the Fareham sailing and Motor Boat Club in Fareham Creek, the 72 Scouts had been resigned to waiting patiently for boats to be brought to them 200 yards away, stretching an already pushed staff.

Youngsters aged six to 18 participate in activities such as rowing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming..

Fareham council's executive member for leisure Cllr Connie Hockley, said: "The works are necessary. It's a very active club and we need to support it wholeheartedly."

Earlier Cllr Ken Thornber of Hampshire County Council praised the Scouts as providing a "brilliant facility, offering young people in the area the opportunity to learn a number of water sports".
