AUSTRALIAN batsman Phil Jaques hit a career-best 243 to put Yorkshire in control at the end of the third day of the Frizzell County Championship Division Two match against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.

Jaques' previous highest score came last season when he made 222 against Yorkshire for Northamptonshire.

Resuming on 193, Jaques was in masterful form again, dominating the Hampshire bowling and scoring almost two thirds of his team's total made from the bat as Yorkshire finished 395 all out after Hampshire had recovered.

Yorkshire were 268-3 overnight and Jaques and Vic Craven continued their impressive fourth-wicket stand by putting together 134 in 33 overs.

Jaques smashed six sixes and 33 fours in just under seven hours at the crease and from 298 balls.

But, once he had been beaten, swinging across the line at Alan Mullally, Yorkshire fell away.

They lost their last seven wickets for 50 as former England pace bowler Mullally recorded season's-best figures of 6-68 on his return to the side.

Mullally, who had previously only taken seven first-class wickets this season, ran through the middle order, dismissing Craven for a hard-earned 41, Andy Gray, Simon Guy and Richard Dawson in quicksuccession.

Hampshire acting captain Shaun Udal had Matthew Hoggard caught at the wicket - one of five catches for wicketkeeper Nic Pothas - before Mullally ended the innings by having last man Steven Kirby leg before without scoring.

Hampshire were soon in trouble when they began their first innings, losing openers Michael Brown and Derek Kenway with only 22 on the board.

John Crawley briefly revived Hampshire with a brisk 53, which included seven fours before he was leg before playing across the line to Craven.

When young Australian Michael Clarke was caught in the slips off Kirby for 27, Hampshire were in trouble at 119-4, needing 246 to avoid the follow-on.

But Pothas, who took 41 minutes to get off the mark, and Dimitri Mascarenhas took the score to 182 before the latter was dismissed for 22 and Hampshire closed, still in trouble, at 202-6.

Pothas was unbeaten with 18 but Hampshire still needed another 44 to make Yorkshire bat again.
