NEW D-Day guided tours at a Fareham museum have started with a bang.

A Sexton self-propelled gun painted in Normandy campaign colours marked the start of special tours around The Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson, which played a key role in the invasion 60 years ago.

John Smith, running the tours, said: "During the Second World War, Fort Nelson was used to store ammunition for the invasion. It also provides a fantastic vantage point to see many of the major areas of importance."

The tours will run until Sunday and each day visitors will hear the gun sound and one of the Fort's costumed interpreters recounting the experiences of an ordinary British soldier taking part in the D-Day landings.
