New Forest Juniors took their first tentative steps in the National Junior Athletics League at Portsmouth.

With only a small squad of athletes to select from in the under-20 age-group, the fledgling club fielded several under-17s.

The women's relays proved the highlight of the day with NFJ wins in both the 4x100m and 4x400m.

The sprint event brought a 52.6-second triumph for Susan Roberts, Cassie Gear, Carly Holder and Emily Sanderson, while 4x400m test was passed with flying colours by Gear, Jo Foote, Mandi Foote and Hayley Pointer in 4.14.1.

Earlier Jo Foote had come second in the A 800m in 2.30.0, while Charlotte Marsden won the B event in 2.39.1.

Mandi Foote was second over 400m (62.6) and Hayley Pointer won her first ever 3000m race in 11.00.5.

Speed duo Cassie Gear and Susan Roberts pulled off an A/B 200m double in 26.0 and 28.2 seconds, but Sasha Mucci had to settle for second place in the 1500m in 5.02.9.

For the men, Pritpal Chana won the B 100m (11.7) and came second in the B 200m (23.3), while Duncan Marchbanks was third in the A 100m (11.6).

NFJ's youngsters competed in the Wessex League Under-11 Challenge at a wet and dismal Southampton Sports Centre.

John Roberts topped the boys' cricket ball competition, throwing it 31.70m, Lilly Winslow won the girls' 75m (12.7) and there was a one-two-three in the boys' 600m through Josh Thatcher (1.58.1), Ryan Taylor (2.01.8) and John Roberts (2.03.7).
