What a debut season it has proved to be for the women of Solent Stars Basketball Club.

In their first year back in National League competition, they completed a sparkling treble by winning the National Division 2 play-offs 83-69 against Birmingham Force at Manchester's Amaechi Centre.

Michael Ball's side rose to the occasion by producing their best offensive display of the season in the first quarter, scoring 32 points to Birmingham's 18.

A hitch occurred early in the second quarter when Claire Wiseman picked up her third foul, sending her to the bench for the rest of the half, but Christie Rourke proved an able deputy.

Birmingham had trouble of their own when captain Elaine White moved onto four fouls and by half-time Solent still had their 14-point lead intact, 49-35.

The whole Solent team got in on the scoring act to extend the lead to more than 20 points at one stage in the third quarter.

Birmingham refused to quit, pegging the lead back to 16, but the inspirational White bowed out with her fifth foul as the quarter closed.

Solent shut the door on any potential Force comeback in the closing quarter with Sarah Cooper and Carrie Jones scoring on the baseline against Birmingham's zone.

The Midlanders made a slight dent in the lead, but Solent were too far ahead by then and the amazing south coast team added the play-off title to their league and Trophy successes.

The most valuable player award was jointly awarded to Claire Wiseman and Catherine Brownsell.

Jubilant coach Ball smiled: "I thought the first quarter was vital for us to come out and set the tempo. We have not started well in many games this season, but the players got their preparation right tonight.

"I felt sorry for Elaine White. Some of the calls she got were very tough, but equally we were in foul trouble early on, but our strength in depth paid dividends.

"When Claire Wiseman had to sit on three fouls, Christie Rourke stepped up big tonight."

Solent scorers: Cooper 16, Brownsell 13, Cloke 12, Willmore 10, Rourke 9, Wiseman 8, Syngellakis 6, Jones 4, Powell 3, Hield 2.
