ONE-HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD election results made news in The Gazette in February when hospital worker Steve Partridge was redecorating his Edwardian house ready to bring it to the spring market.

With the work now completed, Mr Partridge, 56, has put his semi-detached house, in Cromwell Road, Basingstoke, up for sale with estate agents Fox and Sons for £314,950.

But he still has a souvenir, courtesy of The Gazette, of the day he uncovered election results in copperplate pencil handwriting while steaming off wallpaper in a bedroom.

The list, dated November 1, 1904, read:

Kingdon 517 Ironmonger

Clarke 515 Pork Butcher

Watmore 498 Grocer

Gagen 449 Hatter

Wheeler 434 Harness maker

Andrews 275 Gentleman.

Mr Partridge told The Gazette: "I came across it on the plaster. I've never seen anything like this. It was a bit of a shock really.

"I've been in the house for 20 years and I've removed wallpaper in that room before, but it must have been underneath some backing paper."

The Gazette brought in local historian Robert Brown to give Mr Partridge the full story of the election and the candidates, and now Fox and Sons has photocopied the article to show potential buyers.

The Cromwell Road house is thought to have been built in 1904 - the same year as the vote count was written on the wall.

Most of the rooms in the house have period cast-iron fireplaces, including the upstairs bathroom, and picture rails.

Mr Partridge (pictured inset above) has exposed and polished the floorboards in both reception rooms and fitted the kitchen with limed oak units inset with an oven and hob.

The kitchen has an adjoining utility room which leads to a cloakroom.

Three of the bedrooms are on the first floor and a fourth has been created in the eaves space.

The front of the house has been paved to give off-street parking and the back garden is south facing.
