LAWRIE PRITTIPAUL has been recalled to Hampshire's Frizzell county championship squad - with a vote of confidence from Shane Warne.

John Crawley is still out with the calf injury that he suffered in the opening game of the season against Durham, so Prittipaul is back in contention after impressing Warne in the Totesport League win against Warwickshire on Sunday.

Prittipaul made 26 after coming in at number three in the 26-run win at Edgbaston and Warne is backing the 24-year-old to rediscover the form that he showed in 2000.

In Warne's first season with Hampshire, Prittipaul scored a brilliant 152 on his home debut against Derbyshire.

It remains his only first class hundred to date but his new Hampshire skipper is ready to hand him a place in the top order against Leicestershire.

Warne, pictured left, said: "I wanted to give Lozza a bit of responsibility against Warwickshire and he did a very good job at No.3.

Losing Creepy is a big loss for us at the moment, hopefully he'll be okay soon, but Lozza is a good young player.

"He's got the talent - it is just up to myself and Paul Terry to get the best out of him.

"We've got a pretty good environment going with the guys at the moment, so hopefully he can do a roll for us.

"His role has been more as a middle-order player who bats six and bowls a bit.

"But I see him as more than that. He's a very talented young cricketer and he showed that with a good partnership with Michael Clarke on Sunday.

"I like the way he goes about playing - he's got all the skill and the shots and, if he improves his shot selection, he's going to make a lot of runs."

Prittipaul played the last three championship games of last season, scoring one half century and averaging 41.56.

Prior to that, he had not featured in Hampshire's four-day side for more than a year but he is fitter than ever after a winter at Terry's academy in Perth.

Terry said: "He didn't have a lot of success with the bat in Australia but he trained hard and played well against Warwickshire on what wasn't an easy wicket."

Terry and Warne will wait until tomorrow morning before confirming whether or not Prittipaul will replace Crawley. The likelihood is that he will but Shaun Udal is also in the 12, so Hampshire will choose between the off spinner and Prittipaul after inspecting The Rose Bowl wicket.

Udal's outstanding all- round display against War-wickshire won't do his chances any harm at the selection meeting. "It was a pretty dynamic effort from him," admitted Terry.

Hampshire: Brown, Kenway, Prittipaul, Clarke, Kendall, Pothas, Mascarenhas, Warne, Udal, Tremlett, Mullally, Taylor.
