A STRATEGY for Older People: Developed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, this was the incentive that brought visitors to the park on April 16.

An exhibition in the marquee reminded visitors of Basingstoke's history.

Formerly an ancient market town, it is remembered for the cattle market, Basingstoke Canal, the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway and the Cottage Hospital. Changes have followed, one after another, with thousands of new residents arriving after 1960 from London and other places.

A challenge for the Strategy for Older Persons is to give people choice, dignity and independence. Many have much to offer as workers - both voluntary and paid.

Of course, being older has its problems - people can feel lonely and have to struggle to manage on their pensions.

Special events, such as social gatherings, are welcome because people can get together and share experiences.

The marquee was full of visitors, with groups seated at small tables, enjoying an appetising treat. People were meeting friends and finding useful information at the same time. Having an enjoyable day stimulates that "feel good" sensation and keeps depression away.
