OBJECTORS have forced a public inquiry into plans to double the number of dustcarts at a council depot near homes in the New Forest.

Council chiefs want to axe a yard at Bunny Lane, Romsey, and transfer the fleet of lorries to the Claymeadow Depot in Houns-down Avenue, Totton.

The proposal has angered Hounsdown families, who say they already have to put up with too much noise and disruption.

Now the Traffic Commissioners - an independent body appointed by the government - have ordered an inquiry into the scheme following opposition from local residents and Totton and Eling Town Council.

A petition signed by hundreds of protesters will be presented to New Forest District Council today by members of the opposition Liberal Democrat group.

The controversial scheme follows the partial merger of New Forest District Council and Test Valley Borough Council.
