JASON Bristow says he is feeling the effects of a long, hard season - but is playing through pain to try to help Town reach the new Conference South set-up.

After a frustrating, tough season on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament knee injury, the central defender has returned as good as ever.

Ernie Howe's plans to ease him into the first team were halted when Ricky Allaway was injured early into the campaign.

It brought Bristow's comeback forward, and he has now played over 50 games so far this season.

Such a gruelling programme is now taking its toll on the ex-Reading man, who has been Town's outstanding player.

Bristow said: "I cannot wait for the season to end. It's been long and hard.

"I am very tired and my knee has been quite swollen and stiff after games, especially in the last few months.

"The ice has been on it and I've had to take it easy for a day or two.

"It's sore, but we've only got a few games left and we've got to push on to get the results that will get us in the new league."

Bristow (pictured) admits he never expected to figure so prominently after such a lengthy spell away from action.

He said: "After what was near to 18 months out, I said to myself I'd be happy with playing around 25 games this season.

"I've played double that now without much rest. I think I've only missed two or three games.

"All throughout my injury, my motivation was playing football again, and I've done it.

"But it's taken a huge effort, and I'm shattered physically and mentally. I'll be ready for a break when the season's over."
