NATIONAL Blood Service loyalty awards have been handed out to organisations in the south that have gone the extra mile to help stock up on life saving blood.

Some of Southampton, Eastleigh and Winchester's most loyal blood-donating companies, including Southampton University, Hampshire County Council and the Daily Echo, were commended at a special ceremony at Marwell Hotel.

The companies in the region have invited the NBS to hold blood collection sessions on their premises during the working day.

The 33 companies that were rewarded at the NBS awards have collectively gathered nearly 9,000 pints of blood, which will have been used to carry out lifesaving treatments to a range of patients.

Louise Coxon, spokesman for the NBS, said: "We really do have a lot to say thank you for to all the companies who allow their employees to give blood during work time."
