NOT many former MPs receive standing ovations at the Edin-burgh Festival, but Gyles Brandreth achieved it with Zipp!, his "amazing night of showbiz fun".

And it is now coming to Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud theatre from Monday, March 8, to Saturday, March 13.

It started as a small idea in a small theatre but, due to massive public acclaim, the production is now touring the country's large theatres with its whistle-stop journey of 100 musicals in 90 minutes.

Alongside top West End stars, Brandreth performs songs from some of the best - and worst - musicals of all time, including Les Misrables, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Gyles said: "Ever since I was a little boy and saw Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady, I have wanted to play Professor Higgins, so I thought that's what I'd do. Then, I thought, I'd quite like to be in The Sound of Music as well... and I wouldn't mind having a go at Phantom of the Opera, and what about The Rocky Horror Show? And Fame, and Hello Dolly? Then, I thought, let's do the lot!"

The former MP for Chester and Lord Commissioner of the Treasury is also known for his appearances on gameshows, his books - including his acclaimed political diaries - and for co-founding the famous Teddy Bear Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon.

He added: "This is an evening for people who love musical theatre, as they get to hear all their favourites. It's also an ideal evening for people who hate musical theatre, as they can get through 100 shows in one night and never need to go to a musical again!"

Tickets for the performance, from £11 to £23.50, and are available from the box office on 01483 440000.
