THREE more Southampton parking areas have joined a campaign to rid the city of car criminals.

The Salisbury Street multi-storey and car parks at Six Dials and Compton Walk have been awarded Secured Car Parks certificates in recognition of their safety and quality.

Seven city centre car parks have now won top status, with four council-run multi-storeys already holding certificates.

About 1.2 million visitors annually use the 2,985 spaces covered by the scheme, part of the Daily Echo-backed Operation Cobra campaign to cut vehicle crime in Southampton.

This is the fourth year out of five that no car has been stolen from the multi-storey car parks in the project.

The latest awards were presented to council parking services staff at the Salisbury Street multi-storey by Cabinet member Councillor Jill Baston.

She said: "The quality of the design, the use of resources and technology such as CCTV, combined with care and vigilance of our parking staff, has made these car parks safe and user-friendly. These certificates acknowledge our continuing success in providing good quality services."

The presentation of the awards was made in conjunction with Hampshire police and the British Parking Association.

Both organisations were part of the team that approved the lighting, layout, use of CCTV and the administrative arrangements for the safe operation of the car parks.
