PLANS to build a huge block of flats which would have transformed the centre of Southamp-ton have been thrown out by city bosses.
Architects and city planning chiefs had spent about three years drawing up the proposals which would have seen the giant "Mayflower Plaza", containing 196 flats, being built on the existing car park near Commercial Road and the city's Mayflower Theatre.
But the proposed 16-storey building was considered to be too high and overcrowded by members of the city's Planning and Rights of Way Panel, who gave the thumbs down to the giant development at a meeting
yesterday.
Councillor Alec Samuels told panel members: "A huge development of this kind ought to pay proper attention to its impact on the surrounding properties and this certainly does not as far as the north side of Commercial Road is concerned."
