Commonwealth gold medal star Pete Waterfield, from Southampton, is now all out for Olympic glory.

Waterfield, competing in the Men's 10m platform synchro, finished second alongside partner Leon Taylor in the FINA World Cup in Athens.

That clinched a place for the pair in this summer's Olympics, also taking place in Greece.

It will be a chance for both Waterfield and Taylor to try and go one step better than their fourth place finish at the 2000 Syndey Olympics.

Waterfield , who struck gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, and Taylor won Great Britain's only World Cup medal at the renovated Olympic Indoor Pool in Maroussi.

"Leon and I have both been working hard since last year's World Championships in Barcelona and to have won a silver medal is such a great feeling," said Waterfield.

"The pool was beautiful and I'm sure we'll both enjoy coming back to compete here again. There was a lot of pressure but I try and use that to my advantage.

"We did mess up one of our dives but we still did enough and it's pleasing that we know we've still got a little extra left.

"I felt confident all week and I knew I just had to stay focussed, because the preliminary stages were a little bit disjointed.

"There was a big gap in between our diving, so you just had to keep your concentration.

"I'm just so happy to be going to the Olympics. Leon and I have said we don't want any more fourth places.

"It was really hard to come to terms with finishing fourth and just missing out on a medal in Syndey, so this time we hope we can do that little bit better.

"To win an Olympic medal would be a dream come true."

Having qualified in second position on the opening-day preliminaries with a score of 334.26 points, Waterfield and Taylor scored 366.81 points on the penultimate day - three days later - to make sure of their podium place.

China's Tian Lang and Yang Jinghui won gold with a score of 381.48 points, but Waterfield and Taylor did beat Canadian pair Alexandre Despatie and Phillipe Comtois (354.06) and Australian duo and world champions Mathew Helm and Robert Newbery (350.94), who finished well behind in fourth.

Waterfield and Taylor also qualified for the Men's 10m platform individual competition at the Olympics.

Taylor finished sixth on the last day of competition but had already received an automatic qualifying place after a starring at the British National Championship at the end of last year.

Waterfield finished 13th but qualified by bettering the top 12 score at last year's World Championships.
