Steve Wigley has insisted not wanting to become the next full-time Saints boss is not because of a lack of ambition on his part.

Wigley, pictured above, who has been put in temporary charge of the team while the club find a successor for Gordon Strachan.

He has said consistently over the last week he will be happy to step aside and move back to his role as director of youth when the time comes.

After 45 minutes of his first game in charge against Everton he admitted most of the fans would have wanted him to step aside then!

But two half-time substitutions changed the course - he brought on James Beattie and Fabrice Fernandes - of the game and earned Saints a 3-3 draw.

However, not even the glory of the finish was enough to tempt him into considering applying for the job full-time.

"Some people hear me say I don't want to be a manager and have a look that they think I must have a lack of ambition," said Wigley.

"But there are a lot of different departments in a football club and a lot of responsibilities.

"I have responsibilities for the players under 20 and that's what I do, and I enjoy it.

"I've started a project and I want to see it through and I'm not arrogant enough to think you can just become a rookie Premiership boss.

"The job has so many pressures - it takes over your life.

"Then you have the side of talking to the press which is something I have mainly got away with doing.

"And then all of a sudden I'm in the public eye and to be honest I'd just like to go back to being Stephen Wigley."

Blackburn Rovers have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of Saturday's clash with Saints with hamstring injuries to skipper Garry Flitcroft and in-form striker Jonathan Stead.

Both players pulled up in Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Charlton.

According to Rovers boss Graeme Souness, Stead - watched by Saints before last month's £1m move from Huddersfield - "felt his hamstring rather than pulled it" so his injury isn't thought to be serious, although he may still miss out on facing Saints.

Flitcroft, meanwhile, limped off after 27 minutes at The Valley and ex-Saints boss Souness is sweating on his fitness.

Rovers lost in chaotic circumstances at Charlton as Dane Claus Jensen scored with the last kick just seconds after keeper Brad Friedel had sensationally levelled.
