THE opposition among fans to Glenn Hoddle's reinstatement as manager remains substantial - despite the lack of major organised protests at Saturday's 3-3 draw with Everton.

There were a number of anti-Hoddle banners and placards on display, but the St Mary's faithful largely got behind their team during a thrilling match.

Yet, prior to the game, they were more than happy to voice their strong concerns at the possible appointment of Hoddle as manager.

In what is the biggest randomly selected poll of Saints supporters yet, 78.3 per cent responded with a 'no' to the question: Would you welcome Glenn Hoddle back as manager?

Many have not forgiven the former England boss for the way he walked out on Saints for Tottenham just over three years ago and are urging chairman Rupert Lowe to keep listening to them.

Lowe had planned to appoint Hoddle 11 days ago, but put things on hold following the backlash among supporters, and is understood to have since interviewed other candidates for the job.

But Lowe retains a high regard for Hoddle's coaching skills and may still believe fans could eventually be won around if he is appointed.

Many fans say they would only contemplate Hoddle IF he apologised for walking out on the club.

Daren Wheeler, editor of the Beautiful South fanzine, believes today's Daily Echo poll is representative of the feeling among fans.

He said: "It's not the reason why Glenn Hoddle left that is the problem, but it was the way he did it. He has not even come out and said sorry.

"Of fans I know, barely one in four want Hoddle, so I would say 78 per cent opposed is about what I would expect.

"After Ian Branfoot, Glenn Hoddle is the second most unpopular Saints manager ever. The club were as anti-Hoddle as anyone when he left, but now they seem to think we should change our minds.

"Football is not like that, it is an emotional pastime. At the end of the day, it comes down to the kind of a club you want and how you want your club to be run.

"Saints manager is certainly one of the best jobs in English football right now and we want a sharp, innovative appointment, not someone who wants the job because he is out of work."
