AT 68 Bernie Bennett thought he had hung up his marathon running shoes for good.
But after the Bishopstoke First Responders helped four of his friends during the past 12 months, he is set to line up in April's London Marathon to raise cash for the dedicated group of volunteers.
The First Responders are trained in first aid and resuscitation and can be called on by Hampshire Ambulance Service at any time to give immediate aid while paramedics are on their way to emergencies.
Bernie, of Sedgwick Road, Bishop-stoke, says he is keen to repay the
volunteers for the comfort and help they gave his friends.
He said: "One particular lady was
suffering from a heart attack, another had a suspected heart attack, another man was a long-term cancer victim who had a very bad turn and the fourth was a lady who suffers from a nervous
complaint and had two very bad attacks."
Although Bernie - who worked for Pirelli in Eastleigh until he retired ten years ago - has not attempted the marathon distance of 26 miles 385 yards for 15 years, he is no stranger to the distance.
He took up running at the age of 44 in a bid to step up his fitness, has
completed 36 full marathons and still runs regularly as a member of Winchester and District Athletic
Club.
He will be cheered along the streets of the capital by his wife and "chief coach" Nola.
Anyone who would like to sponsor Bernie should ring him on 023 8061 1740.
