A PIONEERING new scheme in Southampton which aims to provide young people with activities outside normal school hours begins this week.

City leisure chiefs are offering free, supervised leisure activities including sport, music and other activities for children to do in their spare time.

The project is being piloted in Swaythling, Redbridge and Sholing until the end of March. City bosses hope that the scheme will help divert youngsters away from antisocial behaviour.

If the pilot is successful the project will be rolled out citywide in a roadshow staffed by voluntary sector workers.

City council Cabinet member for communities and regeneration Councillor Liz Mizon said: "This is a great scheme for 8 to 13-year-olds, an age group which has been long neglected."
