Teddy Sheringham is aiming to make it another forgettable FA Cup day on the south coast for former Nottingham Forest teammate Brian Laws tomorrow.

Sheringham and Scunthorpe United manager Laws played in the Forest side that lost 1-0 in the FA Cup at Fratton Park in 1992, a victory that booked Pompey a semi- final date with Liverpool.

Pompey captain Sheringham left the City Ground for Tottenham later that year but he still remembers Laws, who is now in his eighth season as Scunthorpe boss.

Sheringham said: "Losing that quarter final at Portsmouth is not a good memory for either of us but hopefully I'll be on the winning side tomorrow. Brian was quiet at Forest but a very good player.

"He was a solid right back, but I don't remember him crossing many balls for me!

"The last time I saw him, I was playing against him for Tottenham so it'll be good to see him again."

Sheringham added: "This is a big cup tie for both teams - we should go through but Scunthorpe will be trying to create an upset.

"The excitement that the FA Cup generates is unbelievable, it's one of three competitions that we could win at the start of the season.

"We're out of the Carling Cup and we're not going to win the Premier-ship, so of course we want to win - that's what we're in football for."

Sheringham is expected to have to play alongside makeshift striker Kevin Harper in the Pompey attack tomorrow, such is the dearth of forwards at manager Harry Redknapp's disposal.

Pompey's latest quest for a new striker has seen Redknapp travel to Spain while Jim Smith has run the rule over Hungarian international striker Tokoli Attila, who is on trial at Fratton Park this week.

Attila, 27, plays for Ferencvaros and has won 22 caps for his country.

Pompey assistant manager Smith said: "He looks a useful player but we'll wait for Harry to have a look at him before we decide whether to sign him."

When Pompey last enjoyed an extended run in the FA Cup, in 1992, Smith was manager and he has rubbished any suggestion that a good cup run will have an adverse affect on the club's Premiership survival hopes.

He said: "Doing well in the FA Cup gives you the impetus to do well in the league - it did for us in 1992. It's a good draw for us, we're at home to a third division side.

"But Blackpool made it difficult for us in the last round and made us work right to the end.

"Our home record is very good but we have to make sure we're mentally right - the foreign players aren't used to treating cup games as seriously as the league games, but we've made sure they know this is a big match."
