MICHAELA McCallum shone on road and country for Winchester & District AC last weekend.

After seeing off the challenge of the guesting Lucy Vaughan in the Hampshire Cross-Country League meeting at Prospect Park, Reading, she was back in action less than 24 hours later, winning the Hayling 10-Mile Road Race.

McCallum - second Briton home in the 2003 London Marathon - finished streets ahead in 56min 56sec - four minutes clear of her nearest rival.

Winchester team boss Alan Coveney said: "She is showing great strength and hopefully this augurs well for her marathon early next year."

Following in her footsteps were Winchester stalwart Bev Edwards in fifth (64.49) and Karen Hazlitt, who worked hard for a personal best of 71.30 in 23rd place to give the club overall team victory.

The ladies' B trio of Jan Spring, Shirley Dyson-Laurie and Delia Brown ran well for a high team placing.

Winchester's men were also crowned top team, pipping Southampton Running Club.

Jason Perry led the way in sixth with a personal best of 54.09 and the supporting cast also clocked best-ever times, with George Hide 14th (55.24), Jeremy Braines 26th (57.43) and Keith Dowson 27th (57.45).

Winchester's B team of Marius Kwint, Paul Sidaway, Jonathon Robinson and Julian Mann all ran inside 60 minutes.

The event doubled up as the county championships with McCallum taking gold, Edwards silver and Perry and Brown bronze.

Delighted team manager Alan Coveney acknowledged after the Hayling race: "The double win is a very difficult thing to achieve when there are so many competitive clubs around tackling this very popular south coast event, which provides such fast times.

"I'm very proud of the men and the women as they sit at the top of the Hampshire Road Race League, as do the B teams in their respective divisions.

"The club are well motivated towards the next race, the Stubbington 10K in January."
