A nailbiting derby was the centre of attraction as rain ruined matches last weekend.

The clash was between Southampton's Weston Park and Fleming Park who both play in Division 1 of the London Poly Technic League.

Both teams decided to go flat out in the first quarter and it was very much end-to-end with few mistakes for fear of the opposition capitalising on them.

It was a physical match on and off the ball as both teams were hungry to win and the pressure was on international umpire Bill Alexander and A level umpire Janice Treasure whose decisions in this fast-moving clash would be vital.

After the first quarter Fleming were up by one due to a turnover.

Weston made several changes in defence, bringing on Grace Symonds and changing their shooting combination by taking off Donna Langrish for Michelle Andrews.

In the second half Weston had more possession of ball and lifted their game well, hitting Fleming back hard to go five goals in front at the half-way stage.

Weston changed their defence once again, putting starting goalkeeper Analyse Cunningham back on. They also changed attack, bringing Donna Langrish back on as shooter. They also brought on some fresh legs in the middle Hayley Costick for Laura Pearce.

Also Shirley Eastwood came on as WD to give some vital experience.

Fleming were eight down going into the last quarter.

The defence put the pressure on Weston's attack forcing error to encourage turnover. This worked well as Fleming had picked up on Weston's tactic for the attack. As the went into the last six minutes Fleming evened the scores before piling on the pressure further to go five goals in front for a 48-53 victory.
