FOR the last ten months it has been a hub of activity providing a focal point for campaigners fighting plans for an asylum seekers' centre at Daedalus.

But now the information point organised by the Daedalus Action Group (DAG) is on the move from the High Street to the seafront.

DAG volunteers who have been manning the information point from the porch next to Lee News have been forced to move because the Co-op is taking over the premises next week.

Now they have transferred all their advice leaflets, posters and stickers to their new headquarters in a mobile cabin in Marine Parade West.

The temporary building has been sited next to the printers Lee Press. After a weekend of installation work all the fittings the doors were opened to the public for the first time this week.

Derek Kent, DAG committee member, said: "We could not have kept going in the High Street because the shop is closing next Thursday. We are delighted we have found another place for our information point."

Ward councillor Graham Burgess said: "We cannot thank Lee News enough for letting us have our information stand in the High Street over the last few months.

"It's through the owner's generosity that we have been able to gain public support for our cause and increase public awareness."

Ten months after the government first announced it was considering housing 400 male asylum seekers at Daedalus while their applications are processed, residents are still in limbo.

Last week a Home Office spokesman admitted that officials had still not finished their study into the suitability of the site.

Only once their technical report is complete will Home Office minister Beverley Hughes announce whether the government intends to apply for planning permission.
