THE chairman of the City of Winchester Trust has stepped down from his position after more than two years in the role because of ill health.

Roger Backhouse QC said he had been forced to tender his resignation with much regret, because a reoccurring heart problem had left him feeling unable to fulfil all his duties.

The City of Winchester Trust is a voluntary body with more than 800 members who lobby civic leaders to preserve the history of the city, with particular regard to buildings and developments.

Those involved with the trust's work say Mr Backhouse will be greatly missed, not only because of his professionalism, ideas and commitment, but also because of his enthusiasm for the trust's work.

The vice-chairman of the trust, Michael Carden, said: "We are very sad to lose Roger, who like previous chairmen, brought the special expertise of his background to the post.

"His commitment and enthusiasm have been much appreciated by trust council members.

"Roger was exceptionally supportive of the trust's recently printed PPG3 document, forging new links with similar organisations in the south and was very anxious to draw more young people to the work of the trust."

Mr Backhouse, who has been a member of the trust for 27 years, said: "I'm very sorry to have been forced to step down because of my health, and I would very much like to have continued in the role.

"I found the role enormously enjoyable and learnt a lot and had been hoping to learn a great deal more.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to get involved in this city and to meet many, many people.

"I would offer my strongest best wishes to the incoming chairman, who I know will be a great success."

Members of the trust have elected Mrs Pat Edwards, a member of the trust for 20 years, a former councillor and chairman of the city planning committee, as the new chairman.
