Promoted as Hampshire Division Two champions last season, Isle of Wight are making a bid to become the first club from the island to make it to the London Leagues if their results so far are anything to go by.

A 22-6 victory over local rivals Sandown & Shanklin was their fourth triumph of the season and maintains their second place standing in Hampshire One behind unbeaten leaders Guernsey, who swept aside Eastleigh 41-0.

The Wootton-based side have surprised many but their success over the Hurricanes has been built over a number of seasons and they have earned their status as number one side on the island again.

Two tries from outstanding full-back Andy White led them to victory and skipper Richard Sawle stated how enjoyable the game was - for a local derby! "We wanted to focus on the rugby as we know what these local derbies can be like. But it was a good game and we deserved to win."

A point behind them are New Milton & District, who have put aside a poor start to climb into third with a satisfactory 34-12 triumph over winless Fawley, who alongside Eastleigh and Millbrook are beginning to be cast adrift at the bottom.

Trojans moved up to sixth thanks to a wind-dominated 20-7 victory over Fareham Heathens, the side they switched places with in the league table.

All the points were scored with the elements at the attacking sides' backs with Trojans building their 20-point haul in the first half through Ollie Joisce and Adrian 'Tramp' Smith, with James Pennington's boot adding the extras.

Heathens, however, battered the Trojans line in the second period but found no way through until one-time Stoneham Lane player Matt Southey crossed from a tap penalty. But, the game struggled into life after that and the visitors held out.

Stand-in skipper Tim Zeale felt his team deserved the win. "This was a massive game for us and everyone pushed themselves for the win," he said while his injured opposite number Mark Dunning berated the injuries his side have struggled with this week.

"We have not been able to train together this week because of them which has made this difficult game more so," he felt.

Millbrook are still hunting win number one as they gave a good account of themselves but still went down 24-13 at Farnborough.

In Hampshire Division Two, Fordingbridge are finally off and running at the fourth time of asking but they were left to count the cost of their 8-3 win over Lytchett Minster, a result which takes them off the bottom of the league.

Winger Neil Fotheringham and centre Dan Brown both suffered shoulder injuries which will rule them out for at least a couple of months but young Steve Brown's debut at fly-half was a major boost for the Foresters.

Skipper Philip Collier scored their first league try of the season to move them up to sixth in the league, that is lead once more by Nomads who had a mighty scare before disposing of Aldershot & Fleet 12-10.

It was only when centre Mark Springall scored with just seven minutes remaining that the Portsmouth-based side maintained their superb unbroken winning run, which had extended to nine games this season.
