Winchester fisherman Nick Jackson had a successful sortie when he went afloat on Sea Juicer, skippered by Rob Hicken.

The day trip out of Portsmouth, fished over a reef, produced thorneback rays, black bream, dogfish, mackerel and tub gurnard.

Jackson used sand eel to tempt the day's heaviest fish in the shape a hefty blonde ray which tipped the scales down to 22lb to set a new personal best.

Despite the action being pretty dismal, local anglers figured prominently during the semi-finals of the Wessex Division of the National Federation of Sea Anglers' Champion of Champions shore competition held at Double Dykes.

Rory Lancaster, who was representing the Lymington club, won on the night with four scad worth 124 points to nudge out Darren Crammer who was representing Southampton SAC with a brace of garfish worth 105 points.

Crammer did, however, collect the prize for the longest fish with a 53cm garfish. Greg Nolan from the Hamble club came third with a 49cm garfish followed by Steve Lynch, a member of RNAD with a 39cm garfish and then Mike Greenwood from Drayton SAC with a 26cm sole.
