THE BASINGSTOKE Bison made a great signing off the ice this week as Wella UK signed up to sponsor the team for a further three seasons.

Neither side would discuss the figures involved but, with the team now back in the top flight of British ice hockey, it is believed to be a substantial amount.

The Basingstoke-based company has backed the team since their first-ever season in 1988 and the new deal will extend its association to 18 years.

Kevin Arkell, head of corporate communications at Wella UK, said: "We are delighted to be sponsoring the Bison again in what will be an exciting year, especially with the new league.

"It is good to give something back to the local community and I know a lot of our staff are supporters of the Wella Bison."

Mr Arkell will be among those cheering the side in the coming season. He said: "I watched a few games last season and have to admit I am hooked and am looking forward to cheering the guys on this year."

Speaking after the new deal was announced, Steve Moria, player/coach of the Wella Bison, said: "This is a great boost for the team for the coming season as sponsorship is vital to all sporting teams."

He added: "It is a tribute to Wella that they have been involved with the team for so long."

Bison boss Moria is currently busy putting together his side for the new season and is talking to a whole host of players on both sides of the Atlantic.

He has put a number of offers on the table to both import and British players who were part of the Herd last season and is hopeful of announcing his first signing in the not-too-distant future.

Elsewhere in the Elite League this week, moves are in place for Cardiff to join. That will mean at least nine teams will line up for the inaugural season.

Manchester have also been busy this week as they unveiled their new name for the coming season, which will be Phoenix. They also appointed Canadian Rick Brebant as their coach.

The player has 16 years' experience in Britain and played for the Sheffield Steelers last season, but is probably best remembered for his spell at the all-conquering Durham Wasps.

The London Racers also announced their coach for the new season in Canadian Garry Carr, who is new to this country but has a lot of experience in his native Canada.

The English capital side will kick off the new Elite League season when they entertain the Sheffield Steelers on Friday, September 12.

This is the only fixture to have been put in place at the moment, but means the Bison are likely to start their campaign the day after at home to a team yet to be confirmed. The complete fixture list is due to be released next month.
