Wasim Akram will prepare for his first one-day games in a Hampshire shirt by telling his new teammates how to play Mushtaq Ahmed.

Pakistan legends Wasim and Mushtaq have played 154 Tests and nearly 500 one-day internationals between them and are set to go head-to-head twice in four days at the Rose Bowl - starting with Sussex's visit in the Norwich Union League tomorrow.

There is a second NUL game for Hampshire Hawks when Middlesex Crusaders visit the Rose Bowl on Monday, but the two south coast derbies involving Wasim and Mushtaq will be the main attraction.

The left-arm quick and the leg-spinner have been in opposition at county level before during their days with Lancashire and Somerset, and Mushtaq starred for Surrey against Hampshire in a televised one-day match at the end of last season. But tomorrow they both make their one-day debuts for their new counties.

Hampshire manager Paul Terry said: "A lot of the guys will have played against Mushtaq before but Wasim will give us some inside information on him - I'm sure about that.

"We won't be talking about the one dayers until after the Yorkshire game but Sussex have had a good start to the season.

"They've got some exciting young players, Murray Goodwin is playing well for them at the moment and in Chris Adams they have another very dangerous player."

The Championship match against Yorkshire ends today with a draw the expected result after yesterday's third day was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Second division favourites Yorkshire were 141 runs ahead with all ten second innings wickets still standing at the end of day two. But tomorrow the focus will be on Hampshire's one-day season.

Terry added: "We've got to find the right formula for one-day cricket get on a roll and get some confidence. We can do very well in it but ideally, we want to get on that roll early.

"It's different to the championship, you've got to be on your game straight away; because the games are shorter it's more important to be in top form from the start.

"You need a side that's very adaptable for one-day cricket. You have to be able to graft, especially at this time of year, and you also have to be able to play at a good tempo."

Terry has included in his squad a player who has excelled in a pinch-hitting role in the past - former Sussex second XI man James Hamblin. "It's always nice to have a good pinch-hitter but there are very few Adam Gilchrists around that can go out and blaze from ball one, particularly in England where the ball moves around more," added Terry.

But the big clash is on Wednesday when the south coast rivals meet in the first round of the C&G Trophy. Terry said: "Every one-day game is different. Someone might play a special innings for you, but it's all about what happens on the day, unlike in the Championship where you can have a bad day and still win the match."

Hampshire have a week-long break after the C&G match, other than a three-day game against Oxford UCCE, which starts on Friday. Terry added: "Our start to the season in terms of the number of games played has been as tough as anyone's and three one-dayers in four days is hard work. It may be that we have to freshen things up for the C&G match."
