A developer whose slogan is "Live your dream well" is causing a headache for residents - and for planners - at Bishop's Waltham .

Five luxury houses built by Berkeley Homes in Winchester Road - sold at prices starting around £155,000 and already occupied - don't comply with the approved application, the planning committee has been told.

Discrepancies include ground floor windows that overlook neighbours' properties in Siskin Close and the removal of a mature hedgerow and a tree which should have been retained.

City planners are to visit the site on Monday to see the problem for themselves - and they have the power to order the removal of the windows and the replacement of the tree and hedge.

Georgina Busher, who represents Bishop's Waltham, was highly critical of the developer.

"We owe it to the neighbours to go and look. There is a problem of keeping a grip on Berkeley. They don't reply to our letters. They have been totally intransigent. It is a disaster," she said.

Richard Pierrepoint, an architect representing the company, apologised to councillors for "over-zealous landscaping".

After the meeting, chairman of Bishop's Waltham Parish Council, Eric Birbeck, said the scheme had been "a headache from day one."

"It has caused major upset to the neighbours in the immediate vicinity. The homes appear to have been built without due care and attention paid to the plans.

"We now have a set of houses that are out of synch with the original plan and it is costing taxpayers' money to unstitch an unholy mess."

Winchester planning officer, Sian Proudlock, said: "Once councillors have looked at the site, they can decide what remedial action is necessary, if any. We are suggesting more landscaping on the boundary."
