THE world music genre may not yet have hit mainstream, but its following is dedicated and has been growing in number for many years now.

Portuguese fado singer Mariza was born in Mozambique, but relocated to Portugal during her childhood. In the Lisbon neighbourhoods she first heard the songs of the country's old fado singers.

Her musical career began in the casinos and clubs where she sang jazz, gospel, soul and Brazilian music - interspersed with the occasional fado performance.

In the late Nineties she was invited to participate in a tribute to Amlia Rodrigues - the great diva of fado - held in both Lisbon and Oporto. Mariza's interpretations were among the highlights of the show, receiving popular and critical acclaim.

In her home country the singer's debut album Fado Em Mim quickly achieved gold sales. She first came to the attention of UK audiences through her appearance on the BBC 2 TV show Later With Jools. This is her first full UK tour, with several dates already sold out.

Her voice is described as an evocative instrument, where the songs meaning is conveyed through her passion - transcending any language barriers.

Mariza is currently recording her second album in Lisbon, due for release here in mid-April.
