HE was expecting to get the odd supermarket petrol token or a crumpled computer for schools voucher that had been left languishing at the bottom of a handbag.

But Hampshire pub landlord David Murray was stunned when locals began handing him wacky money-off coupons for breast enlargements, tummy tucks and massages in exchange for food in his pub.

David launched a new year offer to give diners £8 off a meal bill for £20 or more if they gave him a valid voucher for absolutely anything.

The offer has really caught the imagination of his customers at The River Inn in Bishopstoke and they are now trying to outdo each other with the wackiest voucher.

More than 200 coupons a week have been used at the pub since the promotion was launched at the beginning of January.

David, who has been landlord for two and a half years, said: "The locals love it. Everyone's got vouchers in their wallets that they never use - I just didn't expect anything like this.

"It's not just the locals - people are coming from miles away to join in.

"We have been presented with some rather obscure offerings. I'm just waiting to see what turns up next.

"The idea has proved a huge success and customers are having great fun challenging each other to find the strangest vouchers.

"As an incentive we are offering a meal worth up to £60 for the owner of the most weird and wonderful voucher.

"The winner will then go through to a national competition to receive £500 worth of holiday vouchers."

"Any voucher, so long as it's in date, can be used to claim £8 off a food bill which comes to over £20.

The promotion ends on February 28.
