A second-half goalkeeping error from Paul Jones left ten-man Saints still without a point on their travels this season as they lost 1-0 to West Brom.

Saints went into the match on the back of their first win of the season against Everton on Wednesday in confident mood but were sunk with just 10 minutes remaining.

Baggies captain Sean Gregan hit a speculative 35-yard shot low at the Saints goal. Jones got down to the ball but seemed to misread it and it bounced just in front of him with his trailing hand unable to keep it out as it agonisingly trickled over him and into the net.

There was further misery for Saints as Paul Williams was sent off with four minutes left for a second bookable offence.

Up until that point it seemed unlikely that anybody would break the deadlock with only two clear-cut chances having been created - both by Saints and both missed by Marian Pahars.

The first came on 19 minutes when he was brilliantly played in by Rory Delap but fired his shot wide of the far post.

With half an hour left a defensive mix-up let in Pahars again but this time Baggies keeper Russell Hoult was able to get down to his left to save.
