Totton boss Ian Robinson was left "bitterly disappointed" after watching his side slip to a 1-0 home defeat against Thatcham Town.

A late Davies winner condemned Totton to defeat and left Robinson admitting: "I don't have a magic answer to the problem."

The boss believes he has assembled a squad which is more skilful than anything he has ever had in seven years at the club.

But he was left scratching his head after a defeat which left his side with even more work to do if they are to make ground on the leading pack.

"It was a very lacklustre performance," said Robinson. "If I could put my finger on what the problem was I'd be managing at a higher level.

"We are so inconsistent, we're a real Jekyll and Hyde outfit, and that is worrying because I don't have a magic wand and we are losing ground on the teams at the top.

"Our pitch is not helping us, not in the least."

Robinson added: "I have got a squad of individuals which is probably better than anything I've ever had before at this club, but individuals do not necessarily make a good team.

"We've got to show a lot more commitment and roll our sleeves up.

"We had lots of quality time on the ball on Saturday and lots of quality possession, but possession doesn't mean anything if you don't turn it into goals, and if you don't score more than the opposition you're not going to win games.

"All this talk means nothing when you pick up the paper and see that you've lost at home again. Results are what I'm judged on."

Robinson said Thatcham's gameplan wasn't pretty. "One thing I will say about the Wessex League is that the long-ball game does win you games.

"Thatcham were content just to soak up the pressure and hit long balls, and if you've got a couple of whippets up front who can chase those balls then you've got a chance."
