NEW year strollers will be able to find out about the woman dubbed the Godmother of Eastleigh during a free guided walk on Sunday.

Charlotte Yonge - a Victorian woman of letters and means - and her contribution to the religious life of Eastleigh will be brought into focus during the 90-minute walk entitled Churches of Eastleigh.

Led by a qualified Hamble Valley tour guide, the walking party will also hear about the martyr who gave his life for his beliefs and his name to the town's Catholic church, Swithun Wells, and why the Salvation Army thought it necessary to launch an attack on early Eastleigh.

The walk will also cover other interesting facts about the religious life and churches of Eastleigh giving a new perspective on this historic railway town.

The walk will start at 2pm from Eastleigh's dance and arts centre The Point in Leigh Road.
