SCORES of Southampton residents are hoping their 20-year battle to ease parking problems will soon end in victory.

Householders in Charles Knott Gardens launched the campaign because of constant hassle parking their cars.

They claim it is so severe that emergency service vehicles would struggle to make their way down the road.

City council transport chiefs are now to carry out a review of the area to tackle the problem, which residents blame on nearby firms.

Clive Parker, 57, said: "It's vital we have a parking scheme here. Some people even park their cars right on the junctions.

"During the daytime it can be impossible to park. It can be very difficult to get dustcarts here, or fire engines or ambulances.

"The whole road is normally full up during the daytime. It's just so ridiculous.

"I've lived since 1980 but it's never been as bad as it is now."

Ward councillors Jeremy Moulton and Brian Parnell are backing their fight to get the city council to introduce a scheme.

Cllr Moulton said: "The residents are not asking a lot. The total cost of this scheme is negligible and it would improve the quality of life for residents of Charles Knott Gardens immeasurably."

Residents hope council chiefs will attend a public meeting to be held early in the new year.

A city council spokesman said a parking survey would be taking place in the area in the near future.

Among the options that could be considered are permits and limited duration parking.
