Nuffield artistic director Patrick Sandford follows the unqualified success of his delightful Christmas show 101 Dalmatians with something a little less festive - though no less enjoyable.
When We Are Rich, which opens in May, is a thought-provoking comedy drama with an impressively broad sweep. Written by Penny Gold, the show takes place on Elizabeth's 50th birthday - a time when she and her family should be celebrating together. But her children and their ambitions threaten to spoil Elizabeth's perfect vision of family life.
Zeb loves horses and sees his chance to ride his first big winner, while Saph gets her thrills on the trading floor in the city and seizes the opportunity to make big bonuses.
Meanwhile, half a world away, Ahmed and his son Khalid are facing tougher challenges. Stretching from a London high-rise to the oil fields of the Gulf, When We Are Rich is a funny but philosophical play about two parents and their children preparing to enter the big race. But will they emerge winners or losers - and, if so, at what cost?
As well as its own major new productions, the Nuffield will continue its programme of one-off shows in the New Year. Forthcoming highlights include performances by comedian Rich Hall (February 9) and singing actress Maria Ewing (February 16).
