Hamble'S Emma Richards spent Christmas in freezing conditions in the treacherous Southern Ocean.
But as she continued on the third leg of the Around Alone race, the 28-year-old opened the few presents she has on board her 60ft yacht Pindar.
Speaking by satellite telephone yesterday morning, Richards wished her family, friends and supporters a Merry Christmas.
"I have never spent Christmas alone at sea before, but so far so good. It has been snowing, so it is also my first white Christmas. Mind you, I'd happily swap the snow for a bit of roast turkey," she said.
Richards, from Hamble, is attempting to become the first British yachtswoman to complete the 29,000-mile race.
