POLICE officers are examining an Aladdin's Cave of goods which were seized during a major police swoop at an illegal travellers' camp on the outskirts of Basingstoke.

The items were seized when around 100 officers carried out an early-morning raid on the camp at Peak Copse, near Dummer on Wednesday morning last week.

An assortment of electric drills, televisions, generators, tables and a giant painting are being kept in a storage room at the London Road station until police decide what to do with them.

Officers are trying to determine if some of the items are stolen and also whether some are authentic goods.

Detective Sergeant Mike Scott, who is overseeing the collection, said: "There are a lot of drills, with stickers of a well-known label, which we believe could have been part of a con.

"We will be checking with trading standards officers to see if they can find anything illegal. We are also making enquiries with the manufacturers."

Officers want to hear from anyone who suspects that their property could be among the seized items.

Det Sgt Scott said: "We are asking people to ring us if they think they can identify their property."

Fifteen people, who were arrested during the swoop, have been released on bail. Hampshire County Council, which owns the Peak Copse site, has now obtained a court order as part of its efforts to regain possession of the site.
