THERE was success for Golden Ring boxers when the Southampton club sent members to Chatham to compete in the NABC quarter-finals.

Sussex-based Ross O'Grady, 15, was an unlucky 13-12 points loser to double English champion Ashley Sexton (Finchley) in a three rounds of two minutes flyweight contest.

O'Grady, who travels, from his Selsey home to train in Southampton three times a week, had beaten Welsh champion Ryan Evans in the previous round, his first bout for the club.

Millbrook's James Richardson, 17, progressed to the last four after a convincing win against Medway Golden Gloves' Terry Thornby.

Richardson, who has won three England titles previously, now faces Dean Smith (Dagenham) at Bristol on November 23 for a place in the final.

He has faced the Essex boy twice before and each has won once.

Shirley's light-middleweight Mark Atkins, 18, narrowly lost 13-12 to Crawley's Anthony Young.

But there was success for 22-year-old Danny Harkins of Chandler's Ford, who defeated Brighton's Tom Freeman to win the Southern Counties Novices Championship, also at Chatham.

As a result, he qualified for the quarter-finals of the National Novices Championship, in which he faces Martin Robbins of Bristol at Frome in Somerset this Saturday.

Lordshill's Darren Wyatt is also in action at Frome, facing Gloucester's Mark Crooks.

Wyatt fought Eddie Edges on a club show in Bristol last Wednesday in a light welterweight contest and won.

Waterside boxer Jimmy Dean has won the Southern Counties lightweight title.

Dean now faces the Western Counties champion in the All England quarter-finals.

Waterside ABC are looking for new members and sponsors for the new season.
