Hedge End's up-and-coming race walk international Nick Ball is proving to be a chip off the old block.

Following in his father Jim's successful footsteps, the 14-year-old Wildern School pupil tasted double success while on a training 'holiday' in Guernsey.

Ball junior's time of 24 minutes and 24 seconds for a 5000m track walk was truly special.

Not only did it place him fourth on the British all-time list for his age-group, but it also broke the Guernsey age best all-comers' record previously held by - you guessed it - his dad!

Jim, a well-known walker in and around the Hampshire area, had created his record 16 years earlier, but found his son too hot to handle this time round.

With Guernsey walker Rob Elliott for company, Ball senior held young Nick for around 2000m before conceding victory to the younger generation.

Going through 2000m in 9.42 and 3000m in 14.38, the tearaway teenager held fine form to win easily from his dad, who clocked 25.21.

In what was a family affair, Nick's younger brother, Chris, walked 2000m in 12.27 at the same meeting.

Four days later Nick again got the better of his father when he posted 14.11 for a three-kilometre road walk. Jim was 22 seconds behind, closely followed by local man Elliott.
