FOR teenager Donna Bowsher, joining Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service as a retained firefighter was the 'best thing' she ever did.
The 19-year-old, who works for Andover-based HSA during the day, became interested in the fire service after going to an open day in Andover a few years ago.
"I absolutely love it.
"Every day is different and I can honestly say that joining has been the best thing I've ever done," she said.
Donna is one of only 25 women firefighters in Hampshire and is the only one based at Andover although a second candidate is being interviewed shortly.
Despite the male dominance, Donna still has to do everything her colleagues do, including fitness tests, climbing ladders, carrying equipment and tackling fires.
"I'm really pleased with how well Donna has fitted in and how well she is doing," said Andover fire chief Robin Furniss.
"I also appreciate the effort that local firms like HSA and Ducal put in.
"The fact they're happy to co-operate with us means I can do my job of keeping fire engines on the road," he added.
