NEWSREADER Martyn Lewis will open a new post office and village shop in Abbotts Ann tomorrow after being impressed with the efforts of the villagers.

They raised £300,000 to help improve the facilities and will be using the village fete to celebrate their hard work.

Mr Lewis first became aware of the project last September when he conducted an auction, which raised £15,000 for the project.

He said: “I was delighted to be asked to return to Abbotts Ann to open the new shop and post office because the village has shown such determination to succeed with this ambitious project.

“I also feel that I have already been involved in a small way and have followed its progress ever since.”

The post office will be run by subpostmaster Jackie Stanton, who said: “Fundraising for the project has been taking place since the former post office was closed in November 1998 and turned into a residential property.

“We are delighted we now have a post office and shop we can truly call our own.”
