Red Star have become the first ever ladies' football team to pick up the Worthington Cup after triumphing at a tournament in Eastleigh.

The Southampton women were allowed to hold the coveted cup aloft - along with 11 other winning men's, boys and girls' teams - after a week-long competition at the Kickers Indoor Sports Centre.

More than 100 sides took part in the competition with ages ranging from eight to adult and all of the winners also received medals.

Centre manager Paul Darke said: "It's the first time a women's team have lifted the Worthington Cup in the history of the competition.

lGosport Borough Ladies began their season in the Southern Region Premier Division with a 4-2 win away to Southampton Women, who had been relegated from the South West Combination the previous season.

Tiffany Moul got Gosport off to a perfect start with an early goal, but a freakish shot from 40 yards dipped in just under the bar to level the scores, and the home side took the lead soon after. In the second-half Gosport stepped up a gear and sealed the game with three further goals. Moul added two more to complete her first hat trick and Amy Swallow added the fourth.

This is a confidence boosting result for Gosport who faced the season having lost two of their most influential players to Southampton Saints.
