UNBEATEN Eastleigh nudged their way up to second in the Jewson Wessex League last night with a 1-0 win over Cowes Sports at Ten Acres.
The Islanders gave them a far tougher ride than Erith & Belvedere had in the FA Cup last Saturday, but Paul Doswell's men squeezed through thanks to their £6,000 strike signing David Laws from Weymouth.
With 50 minutes gone, he headed home a cross from ex-Saint David Hughes, who had come on as a second-half substitute.
It was Laws's second goal in as many league games for the Ten Acres side.
Cowes, though, could easily have equalised when Danny Woods fouled at the expense of a penalty, but Phil McDonald struck it wide.
Eastleigh's under-18s overcame Banstead 4-2 in the FA Youth Cup preliminary round courtesy of Barry Mason (2), Cameron Scammell and Paul Crabtree. They host the winners of the Farnborough v Aldershot tie in the next round.
