ONLY days after the fastest swim of her life, Laura Wood fears it may not be good enough to earn her a Commonwealth Games place.

The Basingstoke swimming club member is still waiting to hear if she has made the Welsh team for Manchester next month but the feedback so far hasn't been positive.

Her father Steve Wood, speaking from the Chineham family home, said he believed the Welsh selectors were going to strictly enforce a qualifying time of 2min 33sec for Laura's specialist event, the 200 metres breaststroke.

Laura swam a lifetime best 2:36.19 in last weekend's British Grand Prix finals at Glasgow to show she is in the best possible shape.

The 19-year-old has been training full-time with the Welsh squad at Millfield School in Somerset since last autumn and has twice been a member of the national squad for warm-weather training in Lanzarote in that time.

So far 10 places have been filled in a 15-strong Welsh team for the Commonwealth Games and Wood and her Basingstoke supporters were hoping that a flexible approach would be taken. England named their team several weeks ago, taking swimmers who had not achieved their qualifying time.

Steve Wood said: "The feedback is that selection for Laura is unlikely.

"The personal best did lift her spirits and Steve Greenfield, the head coach at Basingstoke, pointed out that she is now one of the highest-ranked Welsh swimmers in Britain.

"But the word on the ground is that they're going to stick to their guns, which will make watching the Commonwealth Games all the more difficult for her."

Laura returns to Millfield next week and will be training with the Welsh squad under national coach Gary Rosser right up to the Games.

Laura swam her personal best time in finishing third in last weekend's final at Glasgow. The two who finished ahead of her were Heidi Earp of England, in 2:33.16, and Lauren Greenshields of Scotland.

Wood also reached the 100m breaststroke final where she was sixth in 1:14.84, which is just outside her previous best.
