COMMUTERS faced huge tailbacks of more than five miles when police closed the M27 this morning after a three-vehicle smash in the roadworks.
One car, a van and a pickup truck travelling eastbound ended up in the westbound contraflow system outside Rownhams services.
Firefighters had to cut one person free from the pickup and another from a saloon car after the accident at 7.24am.
A doctor, an ambulance, three fire engines and 14 police patrol cars were at the scene.
The motorway was closed westbound between junctions four, the M3 interchange, and three, the M271 interchange at Nursling.
At 8.30am tailbacks stretched about five miles on the westbound carriageway back to junction seven at Hedge End.
